CENTRAL CXL 2017 FAQ – Frequently asked questions
Here we seek to answer the obvious questions you may have in respect of racing cyclo-cross in Central League races. We will add further answers as riders raise queries on the web and on social media and so do look again.
DO I NEED TO AFFILIATE TO RIDE CENTRAL RACES?
No – all races are open to all riders although race entry on line in advance is cheaper for registered riders.
DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF BRITISH CYCLING?
No- but again it is cheaper to race if you are a member of BC as you will not have to pay the £3 for a day licence each time you race.
DO I NEED TO BELONG TO AN AFFILIATED CLUB?
You can race as a private member or as a member of a BC registered club. You can affiliate to the league whether you are a club member or not.
IN PREVIOUS YEARS MY CLUB AFFILIATED AND I DID NOT NEED TO?
We have moved to individual registration at £10 for juniors and adults and £5 for youth and younger riders. This is because we will have individual chips and need to associate them with individual riders. Clubs no longer affiliate and every rider must register as an individual if they want to participate in the league and achieve cheaper race entry.
CAN I JOIN BC AS A CENTRAL CXL RIDER?
If you are new to British Cycling, you can join for free as an affiliated rider in Central CXL.
https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/clubs/membership. Follow the link and select Central Cyclo-cross League as your club and you will receive a free Bronze membership and provisional licence as an introductory offer.
DO I NEED TO RACE IN THE NOVICE EVENT AS A FIRST TIMER?
No – you can enter your appropriate adult category event if you prefer. The novice event is a shorter race at 30 minutes and is intended to provide a lower key introduction to the sport. There are no points or prizes in the novice event and you can race it as many times as you like – you do not have to move up to a category race after a certain number of novice races.
CAN I RACE A MOUNTAIN BIKE?
All races are open to riders of cross bikes and MTBs
IS THERE A SEPARATE WOMENS RACE?
Women do have their own start but do race with the V50 men who start a minute ahead of the women.
HOW DOES GRIDDING WORK?
Only riders who enter in advance will automatically be gridded. Preference is given to registered riders who enter online in advance. If you do not enter in advance, you will not be gridded as positions are calculated prior to race day and are based on average Central CXL finishing positions and other race performances if not a member of Central CXL. The only exception to this would be if a national champion or similar quality rider entered on the day and requested a grid position from the commissaire on the day.
There will be an email address to request a gridding position if you are from outside the league but are of sufficient quality to merit a grid position. This applies only to non league riders who have entered online prior to race day.
WHEN DO ENTRIES CLOSE?
Online entries always close at midnight on the Tuesday prior to each race.
WHY ARE ONLINE ENTRIES CHEAPER?
You are rewarded for entering early with a cheaper price as this helps with race admin. We recognize that riders will on occasions miss the online entry deadline or decide to travel on the day to race. Our race entries will accommodate on the day entries but at a higher price to reflect the administrative inconvenience.
ARE ALL RACES CHIP TIMED?
Yes – all races from U8- V50 will be chip timed for the 2017 season with results available on a screen at the event and live updated online.
HOW DO CHIPS WORK?
All riders will buy a chip at their first race for £5. This chip can be cashed in on the day or retained to swap for a new one at any subsequent race. All races use new chips as they are coded against race numbers for pre entered and entries on the day. Riders either swap their chip from a previous race for their new one or pay £5. This year you can claim your fiver back at any event or use your chip as a £5 token to get a new chip at any event in the 2017/18 league.
WHEN DO I COLLECT MY CHIP
Each event has a fresh batch of activated chips associated with the allocated race numbers.
Registered riders will collect their new number and chip at registration at every race they enter. The chip and race number will be provided in exchange of the chip form the previous event. If they forget their chip, they will have to pay £5
Registered riders chips act as a token week to week which they will exchange for a live chip activated for that event.
Numbers and chips are collected either in exchange for a chip or £5 – simple choice – remember your chip!
Non registered riders entering online or entries on the day will rent a chip for £5 which is returned at the end of the race when the chip is returned.
WHERE DO I ATTACH MY CHIP?
Chips will be attached to a riders shoe. This is because in cyclo-cross riders will change bikes and so it would not work with bike mounted chips as used in MTB and road races
HOW DOES CENTRAL CXL SCORING WORK?
The race winner for each category race will be allocated 100 points with the points reducing further down the field. Registered rider’s points will automatically be allocated to provide a ranking.
HOW MANY EVENTS COUNT?
There are currently 13 events for the 2017 season and we are hoping to add another 2 .
Your best 8 scores will be counted towards the season end prizes. Only riders who race in 4 races or more will qualify for final league rankings.
And so in summary 4 to qualify and best 8 to score. If you race only 3 events for example you will not be counted in the rankings. If you race 4-8 events, your scores will be added to provide a ranking. If you race more than 8 events, your weakest scores will be dropped with only the best 8 featuring in the tally.
